Sovereignty Threat: EU Warns Trump’s Tariff Threat Might Cause “Downward Spiral”

Viewing the move as a direct sovereignty threat, the EU warns Trump’s tariff threat might cause a “dangerous downward spiral.” As the specter of a trade standoff grows, the European Union has summoned its envoys for urgent talks. Leaders warned that President Trump’s threat to tax European goods over the Greenland issue undermines the rule of law.

Jointly, Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa declared that the EU would not be divided. They warned that tariffs undermine the transatlantic bond and risk dangerous consequences. The leaders affirmed that Europe would remain united, coordinated, and committed to upholding its sovereignty in the face of these threats.

The US President has outlined a harsh tariff schedule. Beginning February 1, a 10% tariff applies to goods from Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland. Trump stated that this would increase to 25% on June 1 and remain until the US purchases Greenland.

Addressing security tensions, the EU defended Danish military maneuvers in the Arctic. Leaders described the exercises as pre-coordinated and necessary for regional security. They stressed that these actions pose no threat to anyone and align with the shared interest of a peaceful Arctic.

The EU has thrown its full support behind Denmark. Leaders noted that while diplomatic channels between the US and Denmark are open, the threat of tariffs changes the dynamic. Sunday’s meeting at 4:00 GMT is expected to result in a strong message of solidarity.
