Donald Trump’s order for the U.S. to resume nuclear testing follows closely on the heels of Russia testing its new nuclear-powered cruise missile, the Burevestnik, and a nuclear-capable underwater drone.
When asked if the U.S. would detonate a nuclear weapon in response, Trump said the U.S. would “test nuclear weapons like other countries do.” He then accused Russia and China of conducting secret “way underground” tests.
China’s foreign ministry immediately denied the allegation, stating that Beijing “upheld a self-defence nuclear strategy” and has “abided by its commitment to suspend nuclear testing.”
Trump’s order, announced on social media, instructed the “Department of War” to begin testing “immediately” and “on an equal basis.”
The former president also used the opportunity to tout America’s nuclear strength, claiming the U.S. has more weapons than any other nation. This has raised alarms about a potential new arms race.
