Vietnam’s journey into space technology took a significant leap with the VNREDSat-1 satellite program, marking the beginning of an enduring collaboration with France. Initiated with the launch of VNREDSat-1 on May 7, 2013, Vietnam’s first Earth observation satellite was officially handed over for operational use in September of the same year. What was initially expected to have a lifespan of five years impressively continues to function in 2026, celebrating 14 years of service. This milestone underscores Vietnam’s growing prowess in satellite technology and sets the stage for future endeavors in this sector.
The VNREDSat-1 program has been instrumental in elevating Vietnam’s expertise beyond mere satellite operations. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent rigorous training in both France and Vietnam, honing skills in system design, satellite operations, and troubleshooting. This training empowered engineers to independently tackle technical challenges, marking a transition from reliance on external procedures to the development of indigenous solutions. Additionally, Vietnam established a comprehensive remote-sensing system that manages imaging requests, satellite control, and data handling. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has provided nearly 30,000 satellite images supporting a variety of sectors including environmental management, disaster monitoring, and national security.
Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, emphasized the program’s role in building a critical foundation of technical skills and human resources for future satellite projects. However, he noted the necessity for further advancements to achieve greater technological autonomy. Key areas for development include satellite design, payloads, electronics, flight software, and ground systems. This vision aligns with the broader goal of transitioning from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing them, thereby enabling Vietnamese scientists and engineers to independently design, operate, and troubleshoot future satellite technologies.
The relationship between Vietnam and France in space technology saw renewed momentum during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. During this visit, a declaration of intent was signed by the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies, signaling a commitment to long-term cooperation in space technology and Earth observation. The collaboration aims to explore a next-generation Earth observation system and assess technological options for a potential VNREDSat-2.
Looking ahead, the partnership is expected to enhance Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, and data applications. Focus areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, and ground systems, along with selected sensors and payloads, are anticipated to provide Vietnam with opportunities to strengthen domestic expertise. This strategic shift aims to empower Vietnam to move towards the co-development and mastery of satellite technology, ultimately allowing for greater independence in designing and operating future generations of satellite systems.
