In a bid to foster healthier AI interaction, the platform allows parents to link their accounts, enabling them to set ‘quiet hours’ during which their children cannot use ChatGPT. Additionally, in scenarios deemed high-risk, parents might receive notifications concerning their teenager’s usage. OpenAI has also implemented safeguards around sensitive topics like eating disorders, curbing access to potentially damaging information and guiding users towards offline support when necessary.
To mitigate the risk of teenagers developing unhealthy emotional attachments to the chatbot, the teen version is programmed not to imply that the AI possesses personal feelings, consciousness, or emotions towards users. OpenAI employs age-assurance technology to estimate if a user is under 18, based on their interaction patterns with the service. If identified as minors, users are automatically directed to the teen version, which includes these additional protective measures.
