Dover Businesses Anticipate Economic Impact from EU Checks, Summer Travel Surge

by admin477351

As the summer holiday season kicks off, the Port of Dover is bracing for one of its busiest weekends, anticipating a surge of travelers heading to the continent. This influx coincides with the implementation of new European Union border procedures, which have sparked concerns about potential delays. With schools in England and Wales starting their summer break, thousands of vehicles are expected to converge on Dover, creating a bustling hub of activity.

The introduction of the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) is poised to impact travel times, as French border officials will now manually register non-EU travelers. The delay in establishing automated processing facilities, due to technical challenges, means that travelers will temporarily undergo this manual process. While biometric data such as fingerprints and photographs are not yet being collected, this added step is predicted to extend processing durations and may lead to congestion at the port.

Beyond Dover, motoring organizations are signaling heavy traffic across major UK roadways, especially near London and on routes leading southwest. The start of the summer season sees millions opting for leisure trips, with a significant number choosing domestic destinations. Favorable weather conditions, along with concerns about flight disruptions and increasing travel expenses, are driving this trend towards holidays within the UK.

In response to the expected influx, the Port of Dover is advising travelers to adhere to designated routes and recommends arriving no earlier than two hours prior to their ferry departure. This guidance aims to help manage the flow of traffic and minimize waiting times. Meanwhile, airport operators and airlines are also preparing travelers for potential delays as the peak holiday period brings increased demand and potential logistical challenges.
